Shadows are caused when an object is blocking the light causing the shape to appear on the ground where the light is not.A shadow only appears in the light or when any shining object faces them.All objects in the way of the light will appear with a shadow in the direction the light is not shadows are when something is blocking the light, so there is a dark patch.
Now many religions have conected shadows with the darkness of ourselves and support that our shadows is our "dark side"..well wouldn't it be terrifying to know that when you walk your dark side is following you?
